Putting in your best efforts — integrating Internet and other alternatives into the WAN

SD-WAN has revolutionized network service options with a network overlay, but the underlay of physical connectivity remains the foundation of the WAN. Network managers now have a broader array of possibilities both for their network technologies like MPLS and DIA and their local access technologies like utilizing business broadband or wireless, including emerging 5G services. This session will explore and compare the benefits and risks of various network technologies, both in the last kilometer and the global network.

  • How do enterprises determine the right mix of MPLS, DIA and broadband for their network?
  • In what situations is the privacy, prioritization, and security of MPLS no longer needed?
  • What are some “model portfolios” of access types per location type? Are two discrete connections sufficient?
  • What are the best analytical tools for monitoring and judging broadband quality and performance?
  • What tools if any help WAN managers judge quality in the sourcing process?
  • Is wireless moving beyond backups and temporary service to become a genuine alternative? What impact might 5G have on the WAN?
  • How can WAN managers determine whether access lines are truly diverse, with no single point of failure?
