Sustainable IT Surges: Global Tech Leaders Make ESG a Business Imperative

Three quarter of global businesses now have formal sustainability credentials when choosing external technology partners

LONDON, 30 OCTOBER 2025 – As global attention turns to COP30 in Brazil next month, new research from Expereo reveals that environmental sustainability is becoming a strategic priority for technology leaders worldwide. The findings come from an IDC InfoBrief commissioned by Expereo, titled “Enterprise Horizons 2025: Technology Leaders Priorities: Achieving Digital Agility”.

The study highlights a growing recognition of ESG’s role in driving customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. According to the report, 43% of global businesses believe improving environmental sustainability metrics will enhance customer satisfaction, while a further 43% cite improvements in operational efficiency. 45% say it will give them a greater competitive advantage. This shift is prompting organisations to reassess the environmental sustainability performance of their IT infrastructure and investment priorities.

Networks and connectivity top the list of areas requiring attention, with 50% of global businesses identifying them as critical to improving IT sustainability. This is followed by cloud infrastructure (41%) and AI/data platforms (33%), underscoring the need for scalable, energy-efficient technologies.

Sustainability is influencing vendor selection too. More than three quarter of global businesses (76%) now require formal sustainability credentials when choosing external technology partners, with nearly one in four (23%) adopting a rigorous stance, demanding major accreditations. This trend is part of the broader shift towards accountability and transparency in enterprise technology ecosystems.

Looking ahead, 21% of global businesses say environmental sustainability-related solutions (e.g. those that reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions) will be a top priority for technology investment over the next twelve months.

Sujata Kukreja, General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer & Company Secretary of Expereo, says:

Sustainability is no longer a side conversation - it’s central to how businesses operate, innovate, and grow. Technology leaders recognise that ESG isn’t just about compliance; it’s about building resilient, future-ready organisations. Enterprises must align every aspect of their technology strategy, including connectivity and infrastructure requirements, with their sustainability goals. This will ensure growing revenue opportunities and underpin their effective environmental stewardship for the long term.”
